WhatsApp’s monthly active users (MAUs) jumped from just 10 million in 2010 to over 1.5 billion by 2017. The biggest spikes came between 2011 and 2014, when users grew from 50 million to 680 million. Growth continued steadily through 2016 and 2017, hitting the 1 billion mark just two years after Facebook acquired it.
Post acquisition, Facebook (and later Meta) stopped reporting WhatsApp user growth on a regular basis, especially after 2017. The next official milestone came in 2020 at 2 billion users, and 3 billion in 2025.
