Air India Financial Performance, 2008-2024

In 2008, Air India was merged with Indian Airlines, which proved to be a disastrous decision. It remained a high debt, loss making company for the following decade, making upwards of 5000 crore loss every year.

The process of disinvesting the airline began in 2016, but it was only completed in '22, when the airline was acquired by Tata Sons. Following the Covid shock, the passenger air traffic returned, and Air India did better in '24, when it halved its losses to 4,4444 crore compared the the previous year.

Under new management, Air India was merged with other Airlines of Tata Group to create a Air India Group. It reported revenues of nearly Rs. 61000 Crore in FY 25 and an operating profit.
